  • Traveling with a breathing apparatus, in Varadero or elsewhere

Photo: Pax News Traveling with a breathing apparatus, in Varadero or elsewhere What are the “rules” for traveling with a breathing apparatus? This is not the case for the majority of travelers to Varadero, but I have seen the question asked on a few occasions. The PaxNouvelles website published a very interesting article (October 11, 2018) on this subject. Here are some excerpts: “The Government of Canada, through its Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), has issued a list of very practical recommendations to keep on hand. · How to pack a breathing apparatus before going through security? · How to maintain the cleanliness of a respirator and its accessories during the security check? · How to travel with distilled water for breathing apparatus?!” “First of all, you should know that the limit of two pieces of cabin baggage does not apply to medical supplies and equipment. In addition, if your customers are traveling with any type of medical device, they are required to inform the agent upon arrival at the control area and have the supporting medical documents on hand. For this purpose, CPAP and BiPAP breathing devices are allowed in cabin baggage.” For more details https://nouvelles.paxeditions.com/fr/nouvelles/buzz-fr/how-to-travel-with-a-respiratory-apparatus https://www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca/fr/research/site/apparatus%20respiratory?f%5B0%5D=type%3Awhat_to_pack

  • HOTELS BEST SUITED FOR PEOPLE WITH REDUCED MOBILITY

Photo: Villa Tortuga Several hotels in Varadero are well equipped to accommodate guests with reduced mobility, including those who use wheelchairs. You might not think so, but yes, several hotels in Varadero have good facilities for people with reduced mobility. I have seen access ramps next to the stairs that go up to the main door in the few hotels I have visited, such as the Villa Tortuga. Many hotels also have ramps to get over the dune which is often between the hotel and the beach. Photo: Roc Barlovento hotel website A wise piece of advice To avoid unpleasant surprises, insist on getting a room that is on the ground floor. Indeed, in Varadero hotels (especially in 3.5 stars and below), elevator breakdowns are not uncommon. And repairs can take time since they have difficulty obtaining the necessary parts. Even if there is more than one elevator, the others can quickly become very busy and waiting times become long. And one day… It is hoped that all hotels will provide wheelchair users with equipment like this. Hotels recommended by our members (including several travel advisors) Paradisius Princesa del Mar – 5 stars – http://www.meliacuba.com/cuba-hotels/hotel-paradisus-princesadelmar Mélia Internacional Varadero - 4.5 stars - https://www.transat.com/fr-CA/hotels/melia-internacional Valentin El Patriarca - 4.5 stars - https://www.transat.com/fr-CA/hotels/valentin-el-patriarca-varadero Sol Palmeras – 4 stars – https://www.melia.com/en/hotels/cuba/varadero/sol-palmeras/index.htm Blau Varadero – 4 stars – https://www.blauhotels.com/en/hotel-blau-varadero-on-varadero-beach/ Arenas Blancas – 4 stars – https://www.sunwing.ca/en/hotel/Cuba/Varadero/occidental-arenas-blancas Douglas Vibert: There is also the Arenas Blancas which has rooms for people in wheelchairs on the first floor and I brought my mother in a wheelchair and there are ramps everywhere on the site. Sonia Sinclair (January 2019): For people who use wheelchairs. I asked the guest service to see the available rooms. The first one I saw is under renovation. After explaining my steps to the new manager, he thought that these photos did not give a good enough image. He kindly offered an appointment the next day and had the room prepared so that I could show you. There are 4 accessible rooms. All on the ground floor. Once your reservation is made, you must write to the hotel, to the manager directly or to the guest service, mention your reservation # and that you need an accessible room: diralojamiento@resortsolymar.gca.tur.cu. This one had a king bed and a sofa bed, but they will accommodate according to your needs. The manager pointed out to me that they even installed the closet pole lower than usual to make it accessible. Since they built the big sand dune after the hurricane, there is now a wooden ramp onto the beach, but no wheelchair access beyond the ramp.” Be Live Turquesa – 3.5 stars – https://www.belivehotels.com/hotel/FR/ficha_hotel/turquesa/descripcion.jsp Bella Costa – 3.5 stars – http://www.breezes-bella-costa.hotels-in-varadero.com/en/ Chantal Young The beautiful Costa is also very well adapted, even a ramp to go to the beach for the rooms, I don't know for the rest everything is great, even I'm in a chair. • Can you drink tap water in Varadero?

Theoretically yes. The water in restaurants and bars in Varadero hotels is filtered and can therefore be drunk without any problem, at least for the vast majority of people. The water available in the rooms and in town is considered drinkable. Many of the members who stay in casas will tell you that they have never had a problem drinking this water. However, water can contain bacteria that our immune systems are not "accustomed to". It's not that they are necessarily dangerous, but they are not "recognized" and our immune system will not want to take a chance and will go into defense mode, hence "diarrhea" type reactions. This is not necessarily "traveler's diarrhea" (see link below), but rather a simple reaction of our immune system. Personally, this happened to me more often in France than in Cuba. To avoid taking any chances and risking "ruining" your holiday due to unpleasant problems, do not hesitate to opt for bottled water if you leave your resort. Prevention is better than cure! What should I do in my case? If you know that you are "fragile" and that you regularly have gastric problems, consult a health professional. They are best placed to give you relevant advice based on YOUR reality. Either way, it is always recommended to bring with you a good medical kit that includes everything you need for different gastric problems. Remember that some medications, even the easiest to find here for us, may not be available or very expensive in Varadero. For more information, please consult: https://www.passeportsante.net/fr/Maux/Problemes/Fiche.aspx?doc=turista https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/diarrhea.html

  • Documents and applications needed to travel to Cuba (updated March 15, 2022)

Updated March 15, 2022: Added the link to the application launched by Cuba on November 15, 2021 which brings together the three forms that we are given on the plane (health declaration, visa and customs). See the link to download the tool and understand how to fill it in this article: https://www.passionvaradero.com/post/electronic-form-for-entering-cuba-obligatory-from-january-1-20222 Of course, you need a valid passport . Since November 7, you also need proof of Covid insurance as required by Cuba. You must also download the vaccination passport valid outside Quebec and why not print a copy as well. It includes the logos of the province and Canada. In Quebec, you download the passport from the same place as the one you use for restaurants, but you must choose the one for use in the context of travel outside Quebec, which is located further down the page. https://www.quebec.ca/sante/problemes-de-sante/az/coronavirus-2019/deroulement-vaccination-contre-la-covid-19/passeport-de-vaccination-covid-19/comment-get- your-vaccine-passport You must also download the ArriveCAN app (it is strongly recommended to do this before your departure) or create an online account. https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/coronavirus-disease-covid-19/arrivecan.html On the plane, you will need to complete three forms: visa: French is on the third line - both sections must be completed without crossing out Health Declaration: Spanish and English only Customs: Spanish and English only For people who are not comfortable with Spanish and English, I have made versions with French translations/information. I have also placed the blank version of the health declaration that you can print and fill out before your departure. Have a good trip !

  • Suspension of vaccination requirement for domestic and international travel

Today, the Government of Canada announced that, effective June 20, it will suspend vaccination requirements for domestic and international travel, for the federally regulated transportation sector, and for federal government employees. While the suspension of the vaccination requirement reflects an improvement in the public health situation in Canada, COVID-19 continues to evolve and circulate in Canada and around the world. In this context, and because vaccination rates and control of the virus in other countries vary considerably, current vaccination requirements at the border will remain in place. This will reduce the potential impact of international travel on our health care system and provide additional protection against any future variants. Other public health measures, such as wearing a mask, will remain in place and will be enforced throughout air and rail travel. Suspension of vaccination requirement for domestic and international travel As of June 20, 2022 at 12:01 a.m. (EDT), vaccination will no longer be required to board a plane or train in Canada. This change does not impact border measures which require all travellers entering Canada to continue to meet entry requirements, including the vaccination requirement. Other public health measures, such as wearing a mask, still apply and compliance will be verified during the travel by passengers on planes or trains. Given the unique nature of cruise ships, such as passengers being in close contact with each other for extended periods of time, COVID-19 vaccination remains mandatory for passengers and crew on board cruise ships. Strict public health requirements will still need to be met on cruise ships. Federally Regulated Transportation Workers Effective June 20, 2022 at 12:01 a.m. EDT, employers in the federally regulated air, rail, and marine sectors will no longer be required to have mandatory vaccination policies in place for their employees. Employers will be responsible for establishing practices for returning to work. Additionally, the Government of Canada will no longer move forward with proposed regulations to make vaccination mandatory in all federally regulated workplaces. Mask Wearing Requirements Travelers on federally regulated planes and trains must always wear a mask throughout their entire journey, except for brief periods (e.g., when eating or drinking). Passengers on board cruise ships will have to comply with mask requirements and other hygiene measures imposed by the crew, whether they are foreign or internal travelers. Wearing a mask is the simplest, most visible, and least expensive measure to reduce the transmission of COVID-19. Studies show that wearing a mask helps reduce the spread of the disease, especially in closed spaces or areas with poor ventilation. Public health experts continue to recommend wearing a mask in crowded spaces and indoors. Science-Based Decision Making Thanks to a successful vaccination campaign, 32 million eligible Canadians have been vaccinated against COVID-19. The Government of Canada’s decision to suspend the mandatory vaccination requirement for the domestic transportation sector was informed by key indicators, including: the evolution of the virus; the epidemiological situation and modeling (stabilization of infections and hospitalizations across the country); vaccine science; Canada's high COVID-19 vaccination rates. The Government of Canada will continue to evaluate measures and will not hesitate to make adjustments based on the most recent public health recommendations and scientific data to protect the safety and security of Canadians and the transportation system. Entry requirements for travel to Canada from abroad remain in place Canadian citizens and Canadian permanent residents returning from international destinations who do not qualify for the fully vaccinated traveller exemption must still present a valid pre-entry test result, undergo molecular testing on day 1 and day 8, and quarantine for 14 days. In addition, all travellers entering Canada must submit their mandatory information through ArriveCAN within 72 hours of arriving in Canada. Travellers who arrive in Canada without completing their ArriveCAN submission may be required to undergo molecular testing on day 1 and day 8 and quarantine for 14 days. They may also be subject to fines or other enforcement measures, regardless of their vaccination status. Remote communities With the suspension of the mandatory vaccination requirement for domestic and international travel, testing accommodations for remote communities are no longer required. The Government of Canada will continue to work with communities, Indigenous groups, provinces and territories, and operators to support remote communities as the pandemic evolves. Foreign nationals Vaccination requirements for foreign nationals to enter Canada remain unchanged at this time. Foreign nationals who are not fully vaccinated remain prohibited from entering Canada. With the suspension of the mandatory vaccination requirement for domestic travel, unvaccinated foreign nationals will still be able to depart Canada by plane or train. • Effective against traveler's diarrhea: activated charcoal

Effective against traveler's diarrhea - Activated charcoal is touted for its anti-flatulent properties and its soothing abilities against pain related to digestive disorders. The Activated Charcoal formula, offered by the Quebec company Léo Désilets, is presented as an effective antidote to reduce the risks of diarrhea in travelers. It acts as a general adsorbent, useful for preventing or treating food or drug poisoning. Adsorption involves the capture of elements responsible, or potentially responsible, for adverse effects in the digestive system. Thus, it contributes to the rapid elimination of toxins, pathogenic bacteria and even poisons through the intestinal tract. This formula, available in capsules or powder, is known to relieve flatulence, bloating, abdominal pain due to gas and feelings of digestive heaviness. Its action, although gentle, is effective. It is recommended to use it occasionally, for a maximum of two consecutive weeks, and to space it out from taking medications, contraceptives or food supplements (two hours before or after) so as not to reduce its effectiveness. By acting as an adsorbent of unwanted substances in the digestive tract, the Activated Charcoal formula from the Léo Désilets company is an essential element in the natural first aid kit and when traveling abroad. Instructions : For adults and children over 12 years of age, take 2 to 3 capsules after meals or as directed by a physician. The dose may be repeated every 2 hours as needed, up to a maximum of 15 capsules per day. Precautions: Do not use for more than two weeks or if symptoms persist, without consulting a doctor. Do not administer to children under 12 years of age without medical advice. Avoid taking this product within 2 hours of taking any other medication, as this may reduce its effectiveness. Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius (59 - 86 degrees Fahrenheit). Do not use if seal is missing or damaged. Medicinal ingredient: Activated Charcoal (USP)…225 mg

  • How should I dress to go to a restaurant in Varadero?

In my hotel restaurants, how do I know what I can and cannot wear? One rule that seems pretty universal to me is that of course you don't enter an indoor restaurant in a swimsuit, especially if you're still dripping with sea water. This is both out of respect for other customers (it's not nice to sit on a wet chair...) and also for safety reasons (wet floors become very slippery). However, in restaurants and outdoor bars called "beach bars", it is perfectly acceptable to show up in a swimsuit. Air Transat, in its new hotel information sheets, offers fairly specific information that can help you. They can guide people who have hesitations. Even if you booked with another tour operator (Sunwing, Air Canada, etc.), the information remains relevant. Here is an example for a 5-star hotel. And in restaurants in town? From what I could see, at noon the dress is “casual” everywhere, for both women and men. You see everything: light dresses, shorts, camisoles, etc. But again, no swimsuits, at least on Primera Avenida. In restaurants like Varadero 60, you will find more men in light long pants and shirts (especially short sleeves), but you will also see Bermuda shorts. Women often wear light dresses or slightly more “chic” outfits (no ball gowns though!). Often, they will simply add jewelry or accessories to add a little touch of elegance. In simpler restaurants, especially those with outdoor terraces on Primera Avenida, I would say that anything “decent” is accepted. Ties I couldn't say what you see in 4 star hotels and above, but from what I have observed myself, it is very rare to see men wearing ties, except at hotel reception and even then! In short, the tie is not a “must” in Varadero!

  • Where to buy food in Varadero

Don't expect to find large supermarkets! Most hotels have a small shop where you can find basic items like biscuits, crisps etc. The selection is often limited and the prices are usually higher, but it can be handy if you need it. For those staying in casas, it is possible to take advantage of the public markets (on Saturdays in Varadero and on Sundays in Santa Marta – check out our specific articles on this on our website). They can also stock up at convenience stores or grocery stores. However, it is important to note that the offer can be limited in Varadero (especially in September 2019), so it is best to be flexible with recipes and cook with what you can find! Here is a list of convenience stores and grocery stores (from the bridge entrance in Varadero to Calle 64): There is also a grocery store at the tip of the peninsula, near the Melia Marina Varadero hotel which also offers rooms without the all-inclusive formula.

  • Popular games in Varadero, for young and old

Photo shared by Pedro Cabrera Martinez Adults I wondered about this so I asked it on our group too. ;-) So here's what we know. Dominoes are probably the Cubans' favorite game. They are also quite fond of chess and Cubans rank very well internationally. Of course, they are very big baseball fans and enjoy being able to go see a game at the stadium closest to their home. The children A child, no matter what country he lives in, remains a child. ;-) He will always find something to amuse himself or, if necessary, invent his own game with his own rules. It seems that anything that allows for tinkering or drawing is very popular, including the big chalks that our children use here to draw on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, they will find a wall or a piece of wood. The classic little glass beads are also popular! And yes, in Cuba too little girls play with dolls, when they are lucky enough to have one, and boys can spend hours having fun with a ball or a small car. Before taking over from their dads to patch up old American cars, they also built their own "jaws", just like our children. There are toys that are produced in Cuba, but they are quite rare and very expensive. This firm is in Europe right now (October 8, 2021) to present its products in order to market them there. Source: https://oncubanews.com/en/cuba/toys-made-by-cuban-entrepreneurs-will-head-to-europe/ Let's face it, what's more beautiful than children laughing out loud while having fun?

  • The grilled chicken stand on Calle 62

Finger-licking good! Regulars at Calle 62 know that it was possible to eat very good chicken grilled for a long time over a wood fire. The stand was located on the corner of Avenida Primera and Calle 62. You certainly remember it: Good news! It's still in the same place but now it has a real, well-appointed kiosk. Sorry if the images aren't perfect, but they are taken from videos shared by Christian Proulx and Renaud Canuel. Photo by Jessica Casanova - End of December 2020 To discover during your next stay!

  • Cueva del Pirata - nightclub

Less known, but worth trying at least once! Excerpt from the InHavana website "This original cabaret is located in a medium-sized natural cave. According to popular tradition, it was once a refuge for pirates who crossed the Caribbean. Today it operates as a cabaret with a daily schedule from 10:30 p.m. to 3 a.m. with an entrance fee of 10cuc. The night begins with a show with a band that performs dance rhythms. Sticky Cuban and international rhythms prevail. Once the show is over, the place becomes a disco with songs that the audience can dance to. For the decoration, flags with skulls and other objects simulating a buccaneer atmosphere were used. The lights are dim and the rustic atmosphere reminds us of a pirate and corsair bar. To give the place a Caribbean atmosphere, the waiters are dressed as pirates. There are many offerings available on the menu between meals and drinks. But without a doubt the highlight of the evening will be the music. To visit: Km 12 Las Morlas road, Varadero. Phone: +53 4566 7751. Hours: Monday to Saturday, 10pm to 3am." • No zoo in Varadero, but...

Havana Zoo You have to go to Havana to see a real zoo, but the reviews are not very positive... There are still some interesting specimens to see. The Parque Zoológico Nacional de Cuba (Cuba National Zoo ) is located in Calabazar, Havana. Mini-zoo also called a small farm near Matanzas The Farm Fiesta Campesina It seems to be a kind of restaurant that also offers access to a garden and some animals. "Correct food (particularly good chicken, well grilled and fresh fruit lightly candied) and welcoming, warm service in this finca. You can then walk all around the restaurant in a small park with local fauna and flora. Nice place both in terms of food and attraction, in a spirit of discovery of authentic heritage." • Double-decker panoramic bus - $5 per day / $3 NightBus

Varadero's hop-on hop-off buses are open-top double-decker buses (there are now some with removable canvas roofs) that are great for getting around Varadero on a budget. The system is pretty simple; you buy a ticket the first time you get on and you can hop on and off as many times as you like throughout the day. The cost is $5 and it's free for children 6 and under (several members have told us that they often don't charge children even over 6). It's important to note that since the start of the pandemic, you can no longer pay with tickets; only credit cards (and soon the new tourist card) are accepted. With no less than 45 stops in Varadero, you can basically visit anything you want. The stops are located near the most important tourist attractions, all the hotels in Varadero, the Varadero Dolphinarium, Parque Josone, the Varadero beach bars and even go all the way to the end of the peninsula. Every half hour a bus passes each stop, there are three buses in constant rotation throughout the day. The lower deck is air conditioned and the upper deck is open air and perfect for kids and seeing the sights! If you decide to sit up top, choose the row behind the driver to avoid getting “whipped” by the tree branches in town. And tie or remove your hat when the bus is traveling on the highway! There are two different companies: one with red buses and the other with green and blue ones. You can change from one company to the other in the same day without any problem. Locate the stops Stop maps Note: Two out of six buses go all the way (further than Casa de Al and the others stop at Calle 8 and do not go all the way as seen on this route. • Discover Cardenas

Cardenas is a small town not far from Varadero. Its full name is San Juan de Díos de Cárdenas. Many of the staff of Varadero hotels reside there. Cardenas, a port city built along the marshy shore of the vast Bay of Cardenas, is sheltered by the Hicacos Peninsula. Nestled between the sea and the hills, it is nicknamed La Ciudad del Cangrejos, in reference to its rich crab population. The municipality is made up of seven distinct neighborhoods: Cantel, Fundición, Guásimas, Marina, Méndez Capote, Pueblo Nuevo, and Versalles. Its narrow streets converge on various squares, including the Plaza de Colón, where a bronze statue of Christopher Columbus, donated by Queen Isabella II in 1862, stands. Commercial and public buildings, including the ornate parish church designed by architect Rafael Carrerá, add to its charm. Cardenas, steeped in deep tradition, contrasts with the modernity of Varadero, offering an authentic atmosphere tinged with glamour. Its history dates back to its founding on March 8, 1828, with the support of aristocratic families from Matanzas. Equipped with early electrical services, public transportation, telegraph and telephone thanks to the completion of the railroad in 1841, the city adopted an urban plan inspired by the North American grid, influenced by the city of Charleston. Cardenas played a significant role during the Spanish-American War of 1898, and was a major sugar export center at the turn of the 20th century. It hosted a large community of European immigrants, contributing to its cultural diversity. Today, Cardenas preserves its legacy through emblematic sites such as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the Museum and Birthplace of Jose Antonio Echeverria, and the Oscar de Maria Rojas Museum, which house historical, artistic and cultural treasures. Explore this picturesque city by visiting iconic sites like Parque Colon, where the Cuban national flag was first raised, or Plaza Molocoff, home to a lively local market. Also, don’t miss the Arrechabala Rum Factory, a testament to the importance of the rum industry in the region. Cardenas, both preserved in its history and looking to the future, offers an authentic Cuban experience, steeped in its rich heritage and vibrant culture. The history of Cárdenas dates back to March 8, 1828, when the city was founded with the support of several old Spanish-Cuban aristocratic families from Matanzas. In 1861, it already had 12,910 inhabitants. The completion of the railway in 1841 boosted its development, making Cárdenas one of the first cities in Cuba to benefit from electricity, trams, telegraph and telephone services. Contrary to Spanish tradition, the city was planned on a North American grid, modeled after Charleston, South Carolina, with the help of Confederate American landscape engineers. A notable South Carolina connection was Ambrosio José Gonzales, a native of Cárdenas, who married Harriet Elliot, daughter of a prominent planter and South Carolina state senator. Gonzales had an ambiguous role during the events of 1850, when Venezuelan General Narciso López attempted a filibustering expedition for Cuban independence. During the Spanish-American War of 1898, Cardenas was the scene of three major battles, although the Spanish victories were mainly attributed to local Cuban forces, led by General Carlos M. de Rojas. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city was one of Cuba's major sugar export centers, attracting large numbers of European immigrants. By 1907, its population had reached 24,280. The Cuba-Brownsville Hurricane of 1933 severely damaged the city, but José Arechabala S.A. financed the dredging of the harbor and coastal reform, including the construction of the Monumento a la Bandera. The surrounding area is noted for its agricultural fertility. Heritage Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Cardenas' pioneer status also extends to electric street lighting, as it was the first to use this utility in Cuba, in 1889. Cardenas has a long railway tradition, and is also known for its deep-rooted love of horse-drawn coaches and bicycles. • Who is the "Benny" of Benny's Bar?

Photo: Wikipedia Who is the "Benny" of Benny's Bar? Benny's Bar is a very nice place that has just been renovated in 2020. It is a partner of Passion Varadero and this is where you will find the "Passion Varadero" cocktail. These two photos are by Renaud Canuel. But who is Benny Moré? Here is what Wikipedia specifies: Maximiliano Bartolomé Moré Gutiérrez , known as Benny Moré or Beny Moré , born on 24 august 1919 in Lajas ( Cienfuegos Province ) and died on February 19, 1963 in Havana , is a Cuban singer and composer , frequently considered the greatest singer of Cuban music [1] . The singer Benny Moré, real name Maximiliano Bartolomé Moré Gutiérrez, is an emblematic figure of Cuban music. Born on August 24, 1919 in Lajas, in the province of Cienfuegos, and died on February 19, 1963 in Havana, he was both a singer and a composer. Nicknamed the "Barbarian of Mambo", he is widely recognized as one of the greatest interpreters of Cuban music. With an innate talent for improvisation and a remarkable tenor voice, Benny Moré excelled in various musical genres, including Cuban son, mambo and bolero. His artistic journey led him to replace Miguel Matamoros in the conjunto Matamoros in 1944, and then to form his own orchestra, "La Banda Gigante", in 1953. Sadly, his life was marked by struggles with alcoholism, and he died of cirrhosis at the age of 43, leaving behind an indelible musical legacy. Every year in September, a Cuban festival named after him takes place in Cienfuegos, his hometown. Many songs celebrate his contribution to Cuban music, and in Havana, a salsa club perpetuates his memory. In 2006, a film called "El Benny" was a popular success in Cuba, starring renowned artists such as Chucho Valdés, Juan Formell and Orishas. In addition, Cuban writer Daína Chaviano paid tribute to him by including him as a character in her novel "The Island of Eternal Loves", which is the most translated Cuban novel of all time and won the Gold Medal in the Florida Book Awards competition. Discography His discography, including the box set "Grabaciones Completas 1953-1960", demonstrates his lasting influence on Cuban music, while albums such as "Caricias Cubanas" continue to delight music lovers around the world.

  • Donate to the Church of Varadero

Donate to the Church of Varadero We are back from a week in Varadero, and as suggested by some, we brought to the church in Varadero some things to help the Cubans. We were able to talk with the "secretario" of the church and he wrote us some things that the most needy people need right now. According to what he told us (and also read on some forums), they are well placed at the church to know who are the people who most need the things we bring. So here's what they need most: Used reading glasses (strength +1 to +3.5) Mercurochrome Ibuprofen (tablet and liquid) Acetaminophen Aspirin Voltaren multivitamins (children and adults) The “secretario” also told us that linen (even if a little torn) was also appreciated, including shoes. Address: Santa Elvira de Varadero Church, in the city center, Avenida 1 Calle 47, Varadero, here on Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ohYKTQzS5sjcdLbC9 The Church is open from 9am to noon Monday through Friday The email address of the church's “secretario” is the following if you want to contact him: ivob@obimatanzas.co.cu Thanks to Jonathan Villiard ( facebook.com ) for his post on the Passion V group aradero

  • Before you leave, do your research!!!

A friendly reminder to our 33,000 members: Before you leave, do your research!!! We notice that many of you consult the Facebook group or the website only when you encounter problems. For example, if you are short of money, think about calculating your expenses in advance and take the time to read the solutions already discussed on the group to find ways to recover money. Several members return regularly to Quebec, so you can ask them. It is simple and easy, and you will waste much less time preparing well than chasing $100 Canadian once in Cuba. Remember that the website passionvaradero.com has over 900 articles, and the group is a veritable goldmine of information before you set off on your trip. Arriving on site and losing two days of vacation due to a lack of information is not ideal. So take the opportunity to do some research with the magnifying glass; 99% of the topics have already been discussed in the group. Don't consult the group only in case of a problem, it is better to be informed in advance than a member in distress. Happy searching and have a good trip!

  • Members with big hearts ❤️

Big-hearted members: A member Catherine Vallée wrote to me because she had asked a toy store for stuffed animals. She saw my post mentioning that I wanted to bring 400 stuffed animals in November. Well, the RENO JOUETS store https://www.reno-jouets.ca/ generously donated 250 stuffed animals, and this same member also gave me 30 children's sports jerseys, which we will distribute next November. Thanks again to those who participate in giving a little smile to the children in Cuba. Thank you 🙏 The #touspourcuba movement is now huge, and every donation is important. Thank you for participating in such large numbers.

  • Things to do with your family in Varadero

Things to do with your family in Varadero Important - This article is an automatic translation from the Perfect Day to Play blog https://perfectdaytoplay.com/things-to-do-in-varadero-cuba/ The photos are also taken from the blog. "Cuba Libre! Cuba amaba! (Free Cuba! Cuba adored!) If you haven’t been to Cuba yet, we highly recommend you go as soon as possible to enjoy this beautiful country. The beautiful soft white sand of Varadero Beach and the hospitality of the people will amaze you. But what other activities can you do in Varadero? Plenty! From water sports to interacting with dolphins and other aquatic life, from tasting rum and cigars to discovering the rich Cuban history, from dancing to delicious local cuisine (NO resort food!). There is plenty to see and do in Varadero Cuba. In this article, we present our complete list of the best activities, tours and experiences in Varadero for families! Things to do with your family in Varadero Enjoy the sun and the ocean Why are we going to Cuba in the first place?! To spend as much time as possible in the sun and near the ocean of course! Of all the things to do in Varadero - the sun and the ocean are the main attraction. TIP: Be careful of the sun, though, and avoid sunburn for the first few days. Your Cuba vacation will no longer be enjoyable. Check out our recommendation on chemical-free sunscreens : 8 Best Sunscreens for Kids. Natural. Organic. Chemical Free . Walk on the beautiful beach of Varadero Did you know that Varadero Beach stretches for no less than 21 km?! That's the entire north shore of the peninsula at your disposal for a hike in Varadero Grand! No shoes necessary - the beautiful fine white sand covers the entire length of the beach. TIP: Bring cash if you decide to walk the entire length of the beach. That way you can take a taxi back to your hotel once you're tired. Build a sandcastle Whether you are traveling with kids or not, building sandcastles is so much fun! You can instantly reconnect with your inner child! Of all the things to do in Varadero - building at least one sandcastle should be at the top of your list for every family! TIP : Again, be careful of the sun, you can easily get carried away and stay at work for hours! Make sure you use plenty of sunscreen (only natural sunscreen !). Take frequent breaks to cool off in the sea to avoid heatstroke. TIP : The best time to build sandcastles is early evening, the last hours before sunset. The sun is not as strong then. Visit downtown Varadero Varadero, sometimes called by the locals of Cuba - Playa Azul (Blue Beach), is actually over 500 years old. It was first mentioned in 1555. We imagine it was a small fishing village at the time. However, today, Varadero is almost entirely a tourist town. It is full of hotels and resorts. Downtown Varadero is clean and well maintained. You'll find plenty of cute restaurants and cafes, small markets, and cigar shops. It's fun to explore the old-fashioned pre-Castro era buildings, some as old as those built by the Spanish. There's a cool church right in the center of town that looks absolutely stunning at night bathed in moonlight. The central park, Parque Josone, is one of the nicest places to get out of the sun. The people are friendly and most speak English or Russian. We encourage you to practice your Spanish though - so much fun! You can hire a horse ride or a taxi-cab (similar to tuk-tuks in India) or walk the streets to get from place to place. The city is not that big. But one of the most fun things to do in Varadero, as in the rest of Cuba, is to see and take pictures of these great classic American cars! You will find many shapes and colors! Rent a classic car Speaking of classic cars… why not stop and take pictures near a classic American car, when you can rent one and take a ride around the town of Varadero? Of all the things to do in Varadero and Cuba in general, a ride in a classic American car is probably the most popular and Instagrammable activity, so do it! You can rent a classic taxi car directly at your station - just talk to the doorman and he will get it for you. TIP : Negotiate the final cost of your tour. But if the discount is given, be sure to leave a tip. Rent a scooter Renting a scooter is another way to get to downtown Varadero or anywhere else on the Varadero Peninsula and even Mazatlan. Each station will usually have a rental service. TIP: Make sure to pick up your scooter early in the day, as they “fly fast.” Also, plan your trip so that you don’t have to drive back after sunset in the dark—rental scooters don’t have headlights, and some parts of the highway aren’t lit. Board the double-decker bus Double-decker buses run between the Varadero Marina and downtown Varadero. The Varadero Beach Tour buses are a fantastic “entry-level” option to explore the Varadero Peninsula from end to end and see what’s possible in Varadero from above. Enjoy an impressive drive to the city center with a nice warm breeze blowing through your hair, while taking a quick look at the other resorts and taking a quick look at downtown Varadero before choosing your destination. Did I tell you these are one-time fee buses that you can use all day? Generally you can catch a bus every 15 minutes, with the last one leaving Varadero at 8:30pm. Rum and Cigar Shop Downtown Varadero has a number of specialty stores where you can find the rum and cigars that Cuba is famous for. The most famous place is probably the House of Rum - Casa Del Ron. For cigars - La Casa Del Habano. In Cuba, all prices are standard, so when it comes to cigars and rum, you will see the same price no matter which store you are in. TIP : Do NOT buy cigars directly from locals. There have been reports of counterfeit cigars . Visit the local brewery Factoria Varadero 43 Cerveceria is a microbrewery located in downtown Varadero and sells craft beers and malts. The brewery has both indoor and outdoor seating. Perfect spot near the beach to escape the hot Cuban sun! The beer dispensers are super cool by the way - they're brought to your table and you can serve yourself - you've never seen anything like it before. Lobster meal Don't miss a chance to try the local lobster! (langouste) Served fresh from the ocean and beautifully cooked - you can dine on lobster at many local places. Dance all night Downtown Varadero has plenty of nightclubs and disco bars to suit all tastes. Go snorkeling There are lots of coral reefs all around Varadero. The sea water is clean and the fish are colorful and fun to watch! There are few ways to snorkel near Varadero - as part of a tour or group excursion, or by renting an individual catamaran. In our opinion, the latter is the best, as the tour would cost per person, while individual catamaran rental is per tour. Plus, you won't encounter a crowd of people attacking a reef at the same time and you are not limited in time. At your resort, you will see signs for a private diving experience (with other activities in Varadero) for only 20 euros - take it! TIP : Bring your own snorkeling gear when traveling to Cuba. Yes, if you don't have it, you will be given their standard equipment... but as we found out, the mask doesn't always fit, and the snorkel is a cheap thing. Enjoy diving activities Diving is not advertised too much in Cuba, unlike places like Mexico, as there aren’t many places that offer it. You’ll either have to bring your own gear or find a reputable place that would take you on a tour with your gear. Chances are it will be pretty expensive too… The good news is that Cuba has some of the most spectacular diving sites in the world ! Sail on a catamaran A catamaran excursion is one of the most popular excursions you can find in Varadero. A typical excursion includes: a catamaran sailing in the waters of the sea, a stop for snorkeling in a coral reef, a lobster lunch on an island, a visit to the ocean dolphinarium and interaction with dolphins, an open bar on board the boat. TIP : When packing your swimsuit for the Cuba trip, don't forget your long sleeve top - one of those that surfers usually use - also called a Rash Guard . Get one for the kids too. You will enjoy this tour greatly. Since the whole day will be spent in the sun, even the strongest sunscreens won't prevent you from getting sunburned. Rent a yacht An alternative to an organized excursion is to rent a private yacht at the Varadero marina. You can do the same program as the catamaran, or do your own thing. The obvious advantage is that it's just your family on board: you determine how much time you need to snorkel, you get incredible photo opportunities when you visit a dolphinarium - you're the only ones there. And for the lobster lunch, there's no queue: the staff will catch the lobster straight from the ocean and cook it for you on board. Playing with dolphins If you're traveling with kids, chances are your Varadero bucket list will have dolphins at the top. Right?! Good news, you have few options for interacting with dolphins. First, your catamaran excursion includes a visit to a dolphinarium on the high seas, offered by all Varadero travel counters. If you decide to take it, and children under 5 years old come for free. You can also go to the Dolphinarium right in the middle of the Varadero peninsula. They have a dolphin show, you can watch other aquatic animals living here and of course you can swim with the dolphins. Downside - this place is very expensive Explore the caves Two caves are worth mentioning here: the Saturno cave and the Ambrosio cave. Cave of Ambrosio Cueva de Ambrosio is located in the Varahicacos Ecological Reserve. There is quite a bit of history around you and you can see cave drawings left by indigenous people long ago. You can get to the reserve by taking an official tour or simply drive a taxi or scooter there and explore it on your own. Saturn Cave Cueva de Saturno is an absolutely magical place located on the western end of Varadero. Saturno is a cenote cave - a popular diving spot for snorkeling and swimming with a deepest point of almost 22 meters! You can rent snorkeling gear here, but bring your own if you can. Or you can simply choose to float in the water admiring the geological formations of the cave - both below and above you. You can get to Saturno from Varadero as part of the tour circuit - the Jeep Safari tour has it included. But you can also go there yourself by taxi or scooter. If you do, try to arrive early in the day as the tours arrive very late. Taste guarapo on a sugarcane excursion A fun way to spend your day exploring and learning, especially if the weather isn't great for the beach, is to take the Sugar Cane Tour. Your kids will love the steam train experience that comes with it! Drive through the Cuban hinterland with thriving sugarcane fields that stretch for miles to a sugarcane plantation. Here you can tour the sugar mill and learn about the machinery and techniques of sugarcane processing and taste authentic guarapo - a sweet and delicious sugarcane juice (adults can mix it with rum). A tour of Cardenas and a visit to the Oscar de Rojas Museums are also included in this Varadero excursion. TIP : Bring your own reusable cup with you to get more guarapo and to avoid creating waste by accepting a plastic cup, only to throw it in the trash a moment later. Be sure to bring a sun hat and plenty of water. Take a trip to Havana There are plenty of things to do in Varadero, but you can't leave Cuba without experiencing Havana! Havana, the capital of Cuba, is definitely worth a visit. You have two options for getting from Varadero to Havana - as part of an organized tour or by hiring a private car tour. The driving time from Varadero to Havana is about 2 to 2.5 hours - the roads are pretty good throughout Cuba and there is not much traffic but we saw a lot of construction work, hence the delays. Varadero to Havana Excursion The tour usually starts at 8am and leaves Havana at 4pm. You will be taken to Havana on a bus with other tourists. You will stop at the Fort, have lunch, then drive through New Havana (without stopping), go to Old Havana, take pictures in Revolution Square and spend two hours in a rum and cigar shop. In our opinion, this tour is too short, misses some fun spots, and wastes your valuable time taking you to the rum and cigar shop because you can buy the same stuff in Varadero. …And you have a crowd behind you in all those photos! Oh…that sucks. Rent a car The best option is to rent a private car with driver and do an individual tour. This way you control the departure time (we had our car leave at 9am and we had enough sleep), and the time came back (we paid a little more and stayed in Havana until 6pm). You most likely get a classic car with air conditioning. You go wherever you want and spend as much time as you want in the places of your choice. Your driver can act as a tour guide AND a photographer!

  • Reviews of Supermarket23, a site for delivering food and other products to Cuba

I highlighted in yellow the options where you can make choices (province, city, language and currency) and added a green arrow to the left to access the main menu. For deliveries to Varadero, it is necessary to select the province of Matanzas and the city of Cardenas. Unsurprisingly, delivery times and options for Havana are generally better than for other provinces and cities. Supermarket23 Agency. Online Store to Send to Cuba Although the prices are relatively high, delivery times are respected, and customer feedback regarding the quality of the products is very positive. Not all products are available in all cities, and supply may fluctuate several times per day. It may happen that when selecting items, a message indicates that a product is no longer available, or that at the time of payment, the number of items exceeds the authorized limit. For the moment, I have not found a way to modify an order in progress, which forces me to start it again from the beginning. However, I have never been charged twice when remaking the order. Order tracking is particularly effective: A first email informs you that the order is awaiting approval (credit card verification). A second email confirms approval of the order. A third email details how many separate deliveries the order will be sent to the recipient (e.g. eggs and hygiene products come from different suppliers) and specifies the delivery dates – very useful for informing the recipient! For each partial or total delivery, another email is sent to you. When receiving the products, the delivery person asks the recipient to open the package in front of him to check that everything is complete and that the quality is up to standard (for example, no broken eggs). There are also services offered by individuals, which seem to work well according to our members. However, not having tested them myself, I prefer not to make any comments on them. • Child Sponsorship in Cuba

In a constant effort to do more, a new section is available on the site https://PassionVaradero.com This initiative was proposed by Vitia Hidalgo and Oveslay Calero, who are constantly looking for new ways to help their people. They came up with the idea of creating a child sponsorship program, aimed at offering them a small gift, such as shoes, toys, food or clothes. So you will find on the website a list of children as well as a form to fill out to sponsor the child of your choice. Of course, this process requires some organization, and everything is not yet finalized. I am in the process of completing the list of children, the form and the practical arrangements so that you can make your donation. Vitia Hidalgo and Oveslay Calero will act as intermediaries between you and the family of the child you have chosen. You can check the progress of the project at this address. (Unfortunately, for Cubans wishing to consult the PassionVaradero.com website, the use of a VPN is necessary, as access to our site is blocked in Cuba) https://www.passionvaradero.com/sponsorship FAQ: 🔥 Is it possible to meet the child and give him his gift directly? Yes, no problem. However, you will have to cover the taxi costs to get to the place agreed by Vitia. 🔥 Is there a long-term commitment to the child? No, you can give them a single gift or extend your sponsorship for as long as you want #allforcuba #PassionVaradero #Cuba #varadero

  • Sunrise and sunset times in Cuba

Sunrise and sunset times in Cuba are determined by the moderate location in the northern hemisphere. Not as extreme as in the Nordic countries, but still remarkable. The days are longer in summer than in winter. With up to 13:40, these are the longest days in June. The longest dark nights are in winter. In December, the night in Havana lasts almost 14 hours and the days begin about 60 minutes later. Monthly sunrise and sunset, in Havana. In this region the sun rises these days at 6:17 in the morning. The last sunset is currently occurring west of the city of Mantua, Pinar del Río at 20:26. For your next vacation in Cuba, it may be useful to take into account the periods of sunshine and thus be able to better organize your plans of visits to make the most of each day, and also know the approximate time at which you should have the camera ready to capture the best memories, of sunrise and sunset in Cuba, undoubtedly the most magical moments of the day. Sunrise and sunset in the largest cities of Cuba The order of the cities is from east to west, that is, in the approximate direction of the sun's path. But since the sun's trajectory is elliptical, sunrise and sunset are never simultaneous over a whole degree of longitude. The data always refer to September 23, local time in Cuba. Sunset duration The distance from the equator and the path of the sun not only determine the time of sunrise and sunset. The further a country is from the equator, the more the sun's path is tilted relative to the horizon. And this results in a different duration for sunset. Havana is located at 23 degrees north latitude, so quite far from the equator. While a sunset lasts only about twenty minutes near the equator, this duration is on average 26 minutes in Cuba. In June, it is about 27 minutes in Havana, while in December it is 26 minutes.

  • "THE" question: What will the weather be like in Varadero?

"THE" question: what will the weather be like in Varadero? No matter where we choose to go on holiday in the South, we all want good weather: sunshine, warm weather with just enough wind, not too much humidity, calm and warm seas…. For Varadero there are statistics that can serve as a guide such as the graphs from Partir.com: https://www.partir.com/Cuba/Varadero/3534632/quand-partir.html However, weather forecasts are an “indication” and not a guarantee of what the weather will be like… neither here in Quebec nor elsewhere in the world, nor in the Caribbean! We can also cross-reference data from different sites to get a better idea of what we can expect in the short term, but nothing is guaranteed yet... What I realize following the sharing of several of our members is that it is more important to focus on the number of millimeters of rain expected than to focus all our attention on the pictograms... which are often more "discouraging" than reality will ultimately be. Of course, during the rainy and hurricane season (June 1st to the end of November), I would not hesitate to consult the National Hurricane Center website to make sure I don't have any bad surprises before my departure! https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ And I would make sure I have good cancellation insurance!!! Prevention is better than cure! A Cuban site The “El Tiempo” section of CyberCuba https://www.cibercuba.com/tiempo/cuba/matanzas/varadero Other sites Accuweather and Windy A very interesting tool! On the Partir.com website, there is an option that allows you to check the weather over the last five years for the travel dates that interest you. Happy holidays in Varadero!

  • The origin of the Cuban people is a rich mixture of cultures and ethnicities

An aging population One of the most striking features of Cuban demography is the aging of its population. Geographic distribution: where do Cubans live? Large cities: Havana (capital), Santiago de Cuba, Camagüey, Cienfuegos, Holguín. The archipelagos: Jardines de la Reina Archipelago, Canarreos Archipelago. The main provinces: Havana, Pinar del Río, Artemisa, Mayabeque, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Las Tunas, Holguín, Granma, 1 Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo. The origin of the Cuban people is a rich mixture of cultures and ethnicities, forged by centuries of history. Cubans are descended primarily from three ethnic groups: Native Americans: Before the arrival of Europeans, the island of Cuba was inhabited by several Native American peoples, including the Tainos and the Ciboneys. Their descendants are today a very small minority in the Cuban population, but their cultural heritage is still perceptible in certain traditions and in the names of places. The Spanish: Spanish colonization, which began in the 16th century, had a profound impact on the island. The Spanish language, the Catholic religion and many aspects of Cuban culture are of Spanish origin. Africans: Slavery played a major role in Cuba's history. Millions of Africans were deported to the island to work on plantations. Their heritage is omnipresent in Cuban music, dance, cuisine and religion. Mestizaje is therefore a fundamental characteristic of the Cuban population. Over the centuries, the different ethnic groups have mixed, giving rise to a very diverse population, both physically and culturally. Other influences have also helped shape Cuban identity, such as the arrival of Asian (mainly Chinese) and European (Italian, French) immigrants. In summary, Cuban identity is a unique blend of Amerindian, Spanish and African cultures, enriched by other contributions. This diversity is one of Cuba's great riches and is reflected in its cultural heritage, its music, its cuisine and its people. To learn more, I invite you to consult these resources: Marco Vasco: https://www.marcovasco.fr/amerique-latine/cuba/guide-cuba/la-population-de-cuba.html Wikipedia: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histoire_de_Cuba Conclusion Cuba's population is constantly evolving, reflecting the island's social, economic, and political transformations. Understanding its demographics helps us understand the challenges and opportunities Cuba faces. The Cuban population: a portrait in figures

  • Health tips to enjoy your vacation in Varadero

Cuba Health Tips: Enjoy Your Stay in Varadero General Information Health Tips for Enjoying Your Vacation Cuba is a relatively safe country for travelers However, as with any trip, there are a few simple precautions to ensure your health. No specific vaccinations are required to travel to Cuba, except for up-to-date routine vaccines. Consult your doctor or travel health clinic for additional vaccines, such as Twinrix (Hepatitis A & B). It is also essential to purchase travel health insurance, which is required by the Cuban government. Although our members rarely report proof being requested upon arrival, it is prudent to play it safe in Cuba. For current health risks or concerns, visit the Canadian government website: https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/cuba Access to equipment and medication may be limited. It is therefore recommended that you bring your own medications and medical supplies for the duration of your stay. Most large resorts have a doctor on site, often bilingual in English and Spanish, with some knowledge of French. If this is not the case, medical clinics are available in town. Common health problems in hot countries Due to the tropical climate, viruses, bacteria and molds can proliferate in food and water in Cuba, which can lead to illness if you consume contaminated products. In addition, the humidity favors the presence of insects such as mosquitoes, which can sometimes carry diseases. The Zika virus, although rare, can pose a risk for pregnant women. To avoid unpleasantness such as traveler's diarrhea, food poisoning or stomach flu, follow these tips: Food Only eat well-cooked foods served hot, especially meat and fish. Avoid undercooked meat, fish or seafood. Make sure that cooked foods are not handled with the same utensils as raw foods, especially chicken. Choose vegetables, salads and fruits that you have peeled or washed with drinking water. Hygiene Wash your hands regularly and use a sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Drink only bottled or treated water, and use ice made from drinking water. Precautions for digestive problems In case of traveler's diarrhea, hydration is essential. Drink clear liquids and, in case of dehydration, use rehydration solutions such as Pedialyte or Gastrolyte. You can also bring powdered Gatorade to mix with bottled water. Alternatively, add sugar and salt to water, or drink diluted juices or bottled soda. For stomach upset related to a different or spicy diet, medications such as Pepto-Bismol may be helpful. However, for severe gastrointestinal infections with vomiting and diarrhea, antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin may be necessary. If symptoms persist, drink only clear fluids and consider medications such as Gravol or Imodium to relieve symptoms (taking care not to overdo it to avoid constipation). Insects The main risk is the Zika virus for pregnant women. Use repellents containing DEET (20%) or icaridin. For insect bites, an antihistamine such as Benadryl and an anti-itch cream may be effective. Prescription medications Bring enough prescription medications, in their original containers, to avoid running out if you are late. If possible, ask your doctor about antibiotics for digestive infections such as ciprofloxacin. Recommended Medications and Supplies Imodium and Gravol (to relieve symptoms for travel or sleep) Pepto-Bismol for mild indigestion Antihistamines Ibuprofen/acetaminophen Anti-itch cream Hand sanitizer (at least 70% alcohol) Insect repellent (DEET 20% or picaridin) Sunscreen First aid kit (bandages, antiseptics, elastic bandages) Condoms (those available in Cuba are of low quality) Feminine hygiene products (difficult to find and expensive in Cuba) Medical Clinics International Clinic of Varadero (Clinica del Sol) Address: Avenida 1 between Calles 60 and 61, Varadero Phone: (+53 45) 66 7710/7711/7712 Opening hours: 24 hours Services: emergencies, medical and dental consultations, medical imaging, laboratory, physiotherapy, dental clinic, pharmacy. However, for those who want to explore further and uncover the hidden gems of this beautiful island, there are many day trips from Varadero that offer a chance to discover other facets of Cuba. Here are some ideas for unforgettable adventures within easy reach. 1. Matanzas: The City of Bridges and Poets Matanzas, often called the "Venice of Cuba" due to its many bridges, is located just 45 minutes from Varadero. This city is known for its rich cultural tradition, particularly in music and literature. Visit the Sauto Theater, one of Cuba’s most prestigious theaters, and explore the quiet streets where you'll discover historic buildings, fascinating museums, and local art galleries. The nearby Bellamar Caves also offer a captivating excursion for geology and natural history enthusiasts. 3. Viñales Valley: A Spectacular Landscape of Mogotes and Tobacco Plantations For a more rural and natural experience, head to Viñales Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site about three hours from Varadero. This stunning landscape is famous for its mogotes—steep limestone hills rising amidst tobacco plantations. Once there, you can take a horseback ride or hike to explore the area, visit tobacco farms where cigars are still hand-rolled, and discover impressive caves like the Cueva del Indio. The charming town of Viñales is also a pleasant place to wander, with its colorful houses and quaint cafes. 4. Cienfuegos: The Pearl of the South Cienfuegos, also known as "La Perla del Sur," is another excellent option for a day trip from Varadero. This port city, located about two and a half hours away by car, is renowned for its unique neoclassical architecture in Cuba. The historic center of Cienfuegos is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a walk along the Paseo del Prado and San Fernando Boulevard will allow you to admire its splendid buildings. Don’t miss the Tomás Terry Theater and the Palacio de Valle, an eclectic villa offering stunning views of Cienfuegos Bay. Nature lovers will also enjoy the Cienfuegos Botanical Garden, one of the oldest and most diverse in Cuba. 5. Santa Clara: In the Footsteps of Che Guevara Santa Clara, about three hours from Varadero, is a city steeped in revolutionary history. It is here that Che Guevara led the decisive battle against Batista’s forces in 1958. A visit to Santa Clara wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Che Guevara Mausoleum, where his remains and those of other revolutionaries are interred. The adjacent museum recounts Che's life and his crucial role in Cuban history. After exploring the site, take some time to discover downtown Santa Clara, with its vibrant Plaza de la Revolución and bustling markets. 6. Ciénaga de Zapata Nature Reserve: A Paradise for Nature Lovers For nature enthusiasts, the Ciénaga de Zapata Nature Reserve, located about two hours from Varadero, is a must-see. This vast wetland area is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including crocodiles, flamingos, and migratory birds. You can explore the region by boat or on foot and visit the Boca de Guamá ecological station to learn more about conservation efforts. The Bay of Pigs, the site of the failed 1961 invasion, is also nearby and offers spectacular snorkeling and diving sites for underwater enthusiasts. 7. Excursion to Cárdenas: A Step Back in Time Cárdenas, just 30 minutes from Varadero, is a city often overlooked by tourists but offers a genuine step back in time. With its cobblestone streets and horse-drawn carriages, Cárdenas has preserved its old-world charm. Common Mistakes to Avoid When Traveling Traveling is an exciting adventure, but it's easy to make mistakes that can ruin the experience. Here are the most common mistakes to avoid to ensure your trip is a success: 1. Not Checking Travel Documents A classic mistake is not checking the validity of your passport or not having the necessary visas for your destination country. This can lead to denied boarding or customs issues. Tip:  Always check your passport’s validity at least six months before your departure and look into visa requirements. 2. Without insurance, medical expenses abroad can be astronomical. Tip:  Always purchase travel insurance tailored to your destination and activities. 3. Not Researching Local Culture Ignoring local customs can lead to misunderstandings or even uncomfortable situations. For example, certain gestures may be interpreted differently in other cultures. Plus, you might not use half of what you packed. Tip:  Prepare a list of essentials and limit yourself to what’s really necessary. 6. Failing to Secure Valuables Theft in hotels or public places is common. Not securing your valuables can lead to significant losses. Tip:  Use a safe and always keep your valuables within reach. 7. • Canadian tourists will be able to pay cash in Cuban hotels starting in August.

The measure will begin to be effective from August 1. Starting next August 1, Canadian tourists will be able to pay in cash in Cuban hotels, in a move by the regime to attract foreign currency in the midst of the serious economic crisis affecting the country. The measure, announced by the Cuban Tourism Office in Toronto, does not invalidate payments that are already accepted by debit or credit cards issued by banks in the Nordic country. Both payment methods will coexist in Cuban hotels, and will later be extended to some shopping centers. "Now they will accept both [payment methods]. It will start with tourist facilities," an employee of this Tourism Office confirmed to Martí Noticias. Canadian tourism represents the main transmitter of international travelers to the island, hence the importance of starting this measure with this sector. Precisely, on July 1, several Cuban airports participated in the Canada Day celebrations. Until last June, 577,549 travelers had arrived from Canada, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics and Information (ONEI). A figure much higher than that of Cubans residing abroad (155,320), Russia (112,721), the United States (83,186) and Germany (36,343), which represent the countries that have contributed the greatest number of travelers to the island. Among them, there is the acceptance of cash payments in foreign currency in certain sectors and activities, such as tourism. Regarding this measure, he clarified that it is imperative for the government "to accept payments in foreign currency" in state institutions. "We are losing a lot of money. We are not going to eliminate banking, but tourists cannot arrive and not book an offer because the cards do not work. This measure will not only be in tourism, but also in stores and other sectors," he expressed. Source : Les touristes canadiens pourront payer en espèces dans les hôtels cubains à partir d'août.
